Desert Rose Cupcakes

Oh so delicate & pretty! I wanted to create an edible version of the gorgeous desert rose crystal.
Want to know how I did it? Simply whip up some buttercream frosting & use the star piping tool. Hold the icing bag at a 90 degree angle & gently squeeze a small amount out. Gently lift the piping tool upwards being careful not to smudge the star shape. Viola! A star!
Repeat & fill the entire cupcake with lots of buttercream stars. Yes this can get a little tedious, but worth persisting with. Practice makes perfect. Perfect yummy cakes worth doing a little extra excersize for! mmm

ps. Use a cream frosting on a simple sponge & you are sure to get a beautiful but unusual wedding cake. Be sure to send me a picture if you decide to make one :)

Unique in the song that she sings

And when she smiles she shines like a star...

Today I saw a grandma walking in a fluero pink high waist skirt, a houndstooth blouse, black fascinator hat & fluero pink high heels. Instead of swooning at her stylish fluero ensemble, I was captivated by something entirely different. She had a smile that outshone her ridiculously vibrant attire. It was one of those smiles that takes over her face. It was HUGE! It didnt matter about her wrinkles, clothes, or that she was wearing heels on cobblestoned footpath. Ridiculous!
Just seeing her smile made me happy as I drove past.

One of the most attractive things is somebody who is content in their own skin. Whether we be tall or short, have braces, crooked teeth, pimples, wrinkles, are a skinny minny or plump & juicy. No we are not all perfect, but warts and all, we are beautiful. Each face is unique in the song that it sings. Each smile a star! Break the mould of pouty disenchanted discontented youths & smile at a stranger. You may just make their day! What have you got to lose?

The dollhouse

Hello everyone! I'm not sure whether anyone noticed but I have been rather irregular with my posting. There has been numerous extraneous circumstances that have made it incredibly difficult to get to a computer for the last few weeks!! I should be a little more consistent from now on :)
There has been lots going on in pretty land!
Numerous sewing projects, beach trips, vintage clothing markets, mandolin lessons, writing songs & to top it all of I am housesitting (looking after a duck, goat, chickens, dog, frog, turtle, fish, blue tongue lizard & a bee hive).
I am most excited about pattern making at the moment. The little spotty playsuit is one of my sewing accomplishments from last week! It is so cute & the best thing is that I neednt worry about flashing my knickers at a picnik. Playsuits are so frolick friendly!
Keep your eyes peeled because, I think I shall start a new etsy store verrry soon...

marvelous light

Into marvelous light I'm running,
Out of darkness, out of shame.
By the cross you are the truth,
You are the life, you are the way.

Strawberry Fields Cupcakes

These cupcakes should only be made if you have intentions to eat them at a picnik, while wearing a red gingham dress, add a little bit of sunshine, a jug of mint julep cordial, friends & a game of beach cricket.
Dont forget to serve with a smile!

Strawberry Fields Cupcakes

Moist Vanilla Cupcakes
 3 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
1 cup unsalted butter, cut into 1-inch cubes
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
2 cups sugar
3/4 teaspoon salt
4 large eggs
1 cup whole milk

Preheat oven to 180 degrees.
Line cupcake pans with patty cake paper liners; set aside.
Combine flour, sugar, baking powder & salt; mix on low speed until combined. Add butter, mixing until just coated with flour.
In a large glass measuring cup, whisk together eggs, milk & vanilla.
With mixer on medium speed, add wet ingredients in 3 parts, (dont forget to scrape down sides of bowl before each addition).  Beat till ingredients are well combined but do not overbeat.
Divide batter evenly among liners, filling about 3/4 full.
Bake for 15 to 20 minutes.
Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely & repeat process with remaining batter.

Fresh Strawberry Buttercream Frosting
4 fresh strawberries & a few extra to decorate the tops of the cupcakes.
Rose pink food colouring.
2 cups of unsalted butter (room temperature).
5 cups of icing sugar.
3 tablespoons milk.

Finely chop the strawberries. Place the strawberries in the mixing bowl & beat untill they are a juicy fruit coulis. set aside.
Beat the butter in a seperate bowl untill smooth & creamy, for approximately 2 to 3 minutes. (This is great for toning your arms!)
Always sift the icing sugar twice before you start. This will ensure a smoother buttercream! No-one likes grainy frosting :(
Add the sifted icing sugar in three parts while blending with the electric mixer.
Add rose pink food colouring one drop at a time till desired colour is reached. (Make sure to blend the icing after each drop to assess the depth of colour)
Once cupcakes have cooled, using the starshaped nozel slowly pipe the tops of each cupcake. If piped slowly from a 90 degree angle you should get a ruffled effect. Top with a strawberry half & voila your done!

Num Num Num! My poor household has been bombarded with batches of cupcakes of late. Too much temptation can be a bad thing... So it was great excuse to share these fruity summer cupcakes with my neighbours. Its never too late to get to know your neighbours! They will love you for it! Happy Summering (or wintering to my friends the other size of the world)

coco rose cupcakes

My mum bought me the best christmas present ever! An icing set. Which means I have been dying to pipe buttercream frosting on everything ever since christmas. My awesome piping set works something like a power tool! So I feel like 'action-woman' in the kitchen. Which, lets face it, is probably the sole reason I have taken an interest in baking...
These are a batch of coconut rose cupcakes I whipped up just in time for new year celebrations! How domestic of me :) Such a girly start to 2010! Hopefully my piping skills will improve throughout the year.
Let me know if you want the recipe?

City penguins

Yes it is true, I am obsessed with blazers at the moment. There is just something about a blazer with rolled sleeves that I love. So I have been praying to the heavens for a cool reprieve from these 40 degree summer days. Purely so I could have an excuse to wear my new tuxedo blazer! Hooray for January 1st 2010 thunderstorm! Yay for excuses to look like a penguin. Soo now that I have worn my mini tux blazer out & about... Bring on the beach & ridiculous sticky hot days!
I ♥  Australian Summer!
